49ers' Unbeaten Run Ends: Falcons Upset San Francisco 29-20 | We Want Winners
Four Turnovers, a McCaffrey Scare & the Streak Ends at 6-1
In this episode of We Want Winners, Rod Adams and Garrett Gonzales react to Atlanta ending San Francisco's undefeated season, 29-20, in Week 7.
Turnovers were the story: the 49ers committed four of them, including two Brock Purdy interceptions — one in the red zone, and a late third-down pick by rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels that sealed the game — plus lost fumbles by Kaelon Black and George Kittle. Seven penalties for 55 yards didn't help, including four that extended an Atlanta scoring drive. Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdowns for the Falcons, Kyle Pitts caught the 300th reception of his career, and Drake London scored despite a concussion evaluation. Christian McCaffrey left briefly with a thigh injury before returning to finish with a touchdown and over 100 yards from scrimmage, a day that also made him one of only two players in NFL history with 70+ rushing and 30+ receiving touchdowns. San Francisco was already without Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Nick Bosa. Rod and Garrett break down how the streak ended at 6-1 and look ahead to the bye week before the 49ers return November 8 against the Raiders.

0:10 [SPEAKER_00]: I hope folks were not surprised at how this game turned out necessarily as we talked about this on Tuesday when we recap the commanders game and we previewed this game, the 49ers lost to the Atlanta Falcons 2920 in a game that was there for the taking and they just could not [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I, I guess I want to start with, so we knew coming in, no my heavens, the wide receiving core was down to the third and fourth string wide receivers.
0:53 [SPEAKER_00]: We knew that coming in. [SPEAKER_00]: And we also knew that, you know, that they were preparing for a [SPEAKER_00]: to a lot of their starting team, how they foresaw it at the beginning of the season. [SPEAKER_00]: Guys like Nick Bosa. [SPEAKER_00]: So they just needed to get through this week and we kind of talked about how with the schedule and with them playing Monday night and having an early Sunday, like at all the makings of kind of a scheduled loss is what Steve Kerr calls it. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think a lot of people, a lot of fans call it a trap game.
1:39 [SPEAKER_00]: I think they're up 14 to three in the first quarter. [SPEAKER_00]: And I sort of thought as since we are in world series time, the brewers in the rays are playing in the world series. [SPEAKER_00]: So I thought of a baseball analogy. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, [SPEAKER_00]: You know, the managers like I know the offense is not going to produce today. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't have all of my key sluggers, my best player. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm asking my starting pitcher to go out there, and I need a strong seven. [SPEAKER_00]: And we need to keep this game close to have a chance to win. [SPEAKER_00]: And in the first two innings, the offense goes out and scores five runs and you're like, great, my ace is on the mound, we just have to keep it under five and then in the third inning, that ace gives up nine runs.
2:24 [SPEAKER_00]: What the hell happened to this game? [SPEAKER_00]: Michael Penex was doing his best to a impersonation throwing everything five yards down field in the 49ers defense couldn't [SPEAKER_00]: Jack Jones was out there looking very confused and very frustrated. [SPEAKER_00]: This game was a little mind-boggling to watch, and then of course you had a lot of mistakes offensively with fumbles and with Brock Perti making some ill-time throws. [SPEAKER_00]: It was just like a, a stew of errors for this offense and defense as well. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't know what takeaways you can take away from this game other than we are thankful to be headed to the buy and we go into the buy six and one.
3:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that's really it. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we heard people talking all [SPEAKER_01]: how Kyle would be able to witchcraft his way past, having Brandon Cooks and Watkins and Cowling being the receivers, and they would just spread the ball around, well, I mean, you get to appoint a diminishing returns, I believe. [SPEAKER_01]: because Atlanta, you know, old brick is a professional defensive coordinator too, and you just get to a point where we're just gonna man these guys up and make a make a play.
4:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And they just buy and large couldn't and you just can't give Christian strength but can't free the ball every time I don't guess. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it was, there was a lot that was, [SPEAKER_01]: a miss today. [SPEAKER_01]: And again, like you said, we kind of expected it. [SPEAKER_01]: But I, you know, I'm kind of drinking the kule because I thought again, it, when they got the wall back, that they would figure out a way that broccoli figure out a way to, um, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, based on this season, he figured out a way to bail us out of it, but it just wasn't to be.
4:48 [SPEAKER_01]: There was too much to overcome. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, there's going to be some finger pointing and I think the easiest ones because these are players who the 49er fans don't really have close ties to. [SPEAKER_00]: This, his extra point, missing this game, it didn't actually factor in the outcome though, it could have factored in how they attacked the last three drives of the game or the last series, the last few series is of the game because they had scored a touchdown to make it 2620. [SPEAKER_00]: and had he kicked the extra point, makes it 26-21, and then you hold the falcons to a field goal, which they did, and then it's 29-21, and you can go for the touchdown and tie it with a two-point conversion, and you probably change up [SPEAKER_00]: the way that you attack late in that game.
5:50 [SPEAKER_00]: But when he missed that extra point, it basically took away some of the possibilities or some of the possible ways to win the game. [SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, Brock throwing that pick late was [SPEAKER_00]: It was a really good play by the linebacker. [SPEAKER_00]: It was something that Brock probably should have seen. [SPEAKER_00]: But when you're just, when the whole second half is just like lineup and shotgun and we just have to throw because and we're not, not only do we have to throw, we have to throw to a defense knowing. [SPEAKER_00]: that are two best receivers are the running back in the tie-in and those are the guys we want to target. [SPEAKER_00]: So imagine how small that field shrinks when the defense knows that you don't trust any of these other wide receivers.
6:39 [SPEAKER_00]: Christian Kirk finally played today. [SPEAKER_00]: One target. [SPEAKER_00]: Zero catches. [SPEAKER_00]: Brandon Cooks played today. [SPEAKER_00]: One catch. [SPEAKER_00]: One penalty. [SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Watkins played the best out of everybody, but he had an opportunity to make two great plays. [SPEAKER_00]: One of them. [SPEAKER_00]: it was quite I'm still trying to figure out and this is all the determination of the on field referees, but there was one really great catch he made that as he was coming down the ball scored it out and had it been declared a catch the replay would have had to reverse the catch and I think [SPEAKER_00]: It may have stood, but it was called on the field a drop.
7:27 [SPEAKER_00]: And so then they had to prove that it was a catch and it was a little bit harder. [SPEAKER_00]: And then there was the other one in the end zone where he makes a great play in the end zone. [SPEAKER_00]: But again, as he's coming down, his feet are in, but he doesn't quite have the possession of the ball. [SPEAKER_00]: And so those two plays by, by Watkins are the difference of him having, [SPEAKER_00]: one of the great weeks for 49ers receiver this year and having three catches for 50 yards, which is what he ended up with. [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, there are some moments here and there that just didn't go their way, but you can't deny that.
8:07 [SPEAKER_00]: The, the, the, the fumbles, Klam Black fumbles right after Jordan James fumbles that the Niners get it back. [SPEAKER_00]: Then on the very next play, Klam Black fumbles gives it to the Falcons they go down in score, and then at the very end, you had a George kiddle fumble, which didn't really mean anything because the game was almost over. [SPEAKER_00]: And then you had Brock's two picks. [SPEAKER_00]: One of those two picks was. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to give Brock the benefit of the doubt in these scenarios, because he is so savvy and smart with this offense, that because of his lack of [SPEAKER_00]: um, reps with some of these players that he probably thought on the first interception, which he was scrambling.
8:49 [SPEAKER_00]: And it looked like he was throwing it down the sideline that they were just miscommunicating. [SPEAKER_00]: And instead, it looks like the the actually the Falcons defensive back was who he was trying to throw it to because he makes a shoe, a shoe string or a toe tapping catch on the sidelines. [SPEAKER_00]: And then that [SPEAKER_00]: when you have four turnovers and you cannot not only get any turnovers back, but you cannot even get close to Penex the entire game pretty much. [SPEAKER_00]: That's that there's, you know, there's nothing, I don't know that you can do and wondering about how Rheem Morris feels at the end of this game because this game was pretty big to him.
9:32 [SPEAKER_00]: and he knew exactly what Atlanta was gonna do, which is, and it wasn't much different from what the Niners tried to do, that two players. [SPEAKER_00]: to get the ball to drink London, be John Robinson, that was it. [SPEAKER_00]: Everything else was decoy and sort of how Brock was using his wide receivers. [SPEAKER_00]: They could not stop two players essentially and Penex just dumping it off and throwing it short and be John running for four yards of pop. [SPEAKER_00]: The defense seemed like it was on its heels and I watching it couldn't understand because I was like, wait, they're trying to do two things here. [SPEAKER_00]: And and do you know with two guys, so why why is it so hard for them to key on these two guys, but, you know, that is for someone who's much smarter at football than me to answer those questions.
10:21 [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure that's probably Kyle's a quite big question in the locker room after this game. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there was. [SPEAKER_01]: It was just there was so many. [SPEAKER_01]: errors that if you. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, it's hard to play that game, but you know, when you could, what is, what was it total, it was a four or five turnovers in total. [SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm trying to pull up the box for now. [SPEAKER_01]: And then so many back breaking penalties. [SPEAKER_01]: They were like three. [SPEAKER_01]: in one drive that kept them on the field, which was just, you know, they were short handed.
11:10 [SPEAKER_01]: And I guess you got a credit Atlanta, but that felt more to me like a nine or lost than a, bit of falcons win. [SPEAKER_01]: It just, [SPEAKER_01]: They just, they, you know, it was like the, the, the, the, what is ESPN doing? [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry. [SPEAKER_00]: Ah, yeah, they just couldn't get out of their own way. [SPEAKER_01]: It was really frustrating to watch. [SPEAKER_00]: So the Niners outgain the Falcons 400 to 295. [SPEAKER_00]: They have more rushing yards than the Falcons.
11:51 [SPEAKER_00]: They're more passing yards than the Falcons. [SPEAKER_00]: They have more first downs in the Falcons. [SPEAKER_00]: The time of possession was about even though, if you watched that third quarter, you're like, how was the time of possession even? [SPEAKER_00]: Like Falcons had the ball like the whole time, but it was the four turnovers to none that was the difference. [SPEAKER_00]: And, I mean, I don't know, I don't know how I guess, [SPEAKER_00]: The reasoning for Brock not being able to really connect with any of the white receivers. [SPEAKER_00]: We know that these guys, some of my counting is very fast. [SPEAKER_00]: We know that Watkins is young though they're very high on him.
12:33 [SPEAKER_00]: We know Brandon Cooks has been able to play in this league for years and years and years so he's a player and then Christian Kirk I guess that's the one and that's the one where you go okay he just hasn't been able to play so you know they still have to build up practice or practice but when you and they built the entire game plan it seems around McAfrey because he touched the ball about every snap on the first drive. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was going to be McAfrey out of the backfield, McAfrey in the run game. [SPEAKER_00]: And then when he had to come out, then it was Caleb and black in the run game.
13:13 [SPEAKER_00]: And then McAfrey gets hurt in or very early in the game. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was almost like Atlanta was like, uh, huh. [SPEAKER_00]: There goes 50% of your offense. [SPEAKER_00]: Now try and beat us and it took all the way until the third quarter from a cafe to get back into the game. [SPEAKER_00]: And by then Atlanta already had the lead. [SPEAKER_00]: So you basically, it seemed like the game plan was get out early. [SPEAKER_00]: ride the run game, ride McCaffrey and just keep, you know, keep the ball away from Atlanta as much as possible. [SPEAKER_00]: But when McCaffrey goes out, it's almost like you had to change what you were doing.
13:55 [SPEAKER_00]: And then in a sense, it just shows how valuable he is. [SPEAKER_00]: But at the, at the other part of it, you go, okay, Shanahan, the, you know, the offensive mastermind, like what is your plan [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe was not a great plan B because they just seemed like a much different team once CMC went to the sidelines. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, that seemed like the game plan. [SPEAKER_01]: And as you say, once that was going, George had a good game, I will say, I mean, yeah, I was not like, I was for 88 or something like that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, notwithstanding.
14:36 [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, that was, that was it. [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, we can't, [SPEAKER_01]: it really wasn't for lack of trying out it. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking at the box where there were 38 total targets and Watkins had six, cooks had three, cowling had five, they just really. [SPEAKER_01]: didn't do anything with them. [SPEAKER_01]: Now again, there were a couple of plays that swam walk in since the day. [SPEAKER_01]: If he makes one of those plays, his line looks a lot different and the scoreboard looks a lot different.
15:17 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's one of those sliding doors type things [SPEAKER_01]: The extra point looks, you know, it's a lot larger. [SPEAKER_01]: It looms a lot larger than it subsequently ended up being, you know, we left with a [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, it just seems to me as good as the first half has gone. [SPEAKER_01]: It just, we left with, um, there's a lot of questions that came out of this game specifically.
16:03 [SPEAKER_01]: For example, I, the, all the talk, [SPEAKER_01]: around social media, 49er fans has been around trading for our receivers. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, today to me, I mean, though, I guess we could say that where I am overreacting to one game, but the fact that they could only get three freshers on Michael Panics is kind of an indictment to me. [SPEAKER_01]: And then as much of enlisting as they [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, and it's, you know, you would have thought coming in that that would have been a strength.
16:43 [SPEAKER_01]: I know the stockings online is decent, but you know where Michael Phoenix is going to be. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's, you know, his leg injuries have been well documented. [SPEAKER_01]: He's not a mobile quarterback, and so. [SPEAKER_01]: You, I would have thought that they would have been able to, especially like you say with the pressure packages that they were bringing in, you know, get three pressures on 34 dropbacks is just, you know, that there's a question there that needs to be asked is is, you know, where do we think that, um, [SPEAKER_01]: Nick Bosa is and is that a serious question is that some place that they might need to think about addressing with a trade?
17:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Funny story, not that funny, but kind of a cool story is my son, JJ. [SPEAKER_00]: He went golfing with his buddy. [SPEAKER_00]: It was, I think it was the early in the week, like Monday or something. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think it was the same day that he went to the to see Niners and Commanders. [SPEAKER_00]: And so who does he get paired up with? [SPEAKER_00]: None other than one Joey Bosa and their pops. [SPEAKER_00]: Who was in town because, you know, the Niners are, but Nick didn't play in that game, so, you know, who knows if they even went to the game, but I thought that was interesting because we were talking about Nick and the last show about.
18:33 [SPEAKER_00]: What do you do for your the Niners when you're paying the sky a lot of money and he can't stay on the field and you know when he can stay on the field he's one of the most dominant past pressures in the league, but now you're at the point in his career where you're like Does he only have a handful of great years and are we going to be dealing with this for the rest of his career and so what do we do. [SPEAKER_00]: It will be interesting to see how they play him, how they deal with him for the rest of the year, because he said to the press that he was going to be ready for the commander's game was not.
19:14 [SPEAKER_00]: He was not ready for this game. [SPEAKER_00]: I think smartly them knowing his career trajectory with injuries, [SPEAKER_00]: They probably were like, we're six and a like, let's just, let's make sure make sure so that by the time you are, by the time we play the Raiders, you know, your healthy and you're good to go. [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be interesting to see how they play that because he himself went to the media and said I'm going to be ready and he was not. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's an interesting thing because obviously he wants to be out there. [SPEAKER_00]: He wants to prove that, you know, he can be out there.
19:56 [SPEAKER_00]: He no matter what we say about current contracts, these guys are all playing for future contracts. [SPEAKER_00]: He wants to prove that he's still the man. [SPEAKER_00]: He wants to put those numbers up on the board. [SPEAKER_00]: He wants to show how valuable he is to this 40-in-air defense and they were like, [SPEAKER_00]: Hold on like we need to play this a little smartly. [SPEAKER_00]: So that'll be interesting to see how they do that because they absolutely needed him today and he was not out there again. [SPEAKER_00]: And so then you saw what we saw which was. [SPEAKER_00]: the only time they got close to pentacles when the center hiked the ball over his head like it's the only time that's happened.
20:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, and then what happens is and I was asking you to mention your thoughts about this. [SPEAKER_00]: It's very rare that you see a Fred Warner led defense. [SPEAKER_00]: So flat footed in and kind of on their heels. [SPEAKER_00]: And again, Atlanta does not have a dynamic offense. [SPEAKER_00]: They have a very predictable offense built around one of the best players in the league in Beeson and a really good wide receiver, but it's not like Drake London had this insane game. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm I'm I'm it's rare that you see a Fred Warner lead defense just kind of sit there and let things happen consistently in front of [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it can, it's interesting that you mentioned that is that PFF grades and in a PFF grade 60 is like average and Fred graded out today at 68, which is, I mean, again, that's well above average for your normal player, but that is real low for him.
21:49 [SPEAKER_01]: six tack seven tackles and one miss tackle and like you say it was just more of a feeling than anything else that um the team just you know they did a pretty good job of bottling up um be John he didn't really you know he didn't wreck games like you know we've seen him do but um [SPEAKER_01]: It was especially, you know, for me, it was the past defense. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's hard for me because, you know, when you look at statistically, when you go up and down the line, you know, it looks like a horrible game for our corners.
22:33 [SPEAKER_01]: But then when you look at context, there was no past rush. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's hard for me to, [SPEAKER_01]: like come down too hard on them when, you know, there just was no pressure, which in that is always kind of been how our defense has been structured is that, you know, if we're going to get pressure, [SPEAKER_01]: Then the load on the corner back to give us a backs and pass rush. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, in pass coverage is not that is not a stringuous as it is in most places when you look up and down a line. [SPEAKER_01]: The completion percentages are just, you know, they are just the stats are just so [SPEAKER_01]: Um, Atlanta, which again leads back to the chicken and it thing and it is just it's clear to me that it's more of a past rush issue than it may be necessarily a coverage issue.
23:39 [SPEAKER_00]: I think a big target will be jackchones from fans and and maybe even a little bit of the media, um, he. [SPEAKER_00]: there that now that it wasn't only him because there was a couple of moments where you're like okay a very disciplined team like to 49ers doesn't make these kind of mistakes we saw them clearly trying to bait the Niners into an off-sides in late in the first half. [SPEAKER_00]: and Osso bit so much so that Greg Olson was like, oh my god, how did you not know this like we I mean as fans we all knew we all knew what they were trying to do and Osso still bit.
24:22 [SPEAKER_00]: And then you have these third and long plays where the defensive backs know that they just have to keep these guys in front of them and you see a little bit of [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, of an out and up or whatever, in Jack Jones grabs onto the waist and it's an easy flag and all the sudden that third and 20 or whatever it was is a five yard first down and you're like [SPEAKER_00]: These are the kind of plays that happen to the teams that lose a lot of games, not to teams that are six and oh, so those were a little I think those stand out a little bit and it's possible there just outliers for a game like this, but they stand out because [SPEAKER_00]: You look at them as mistakes that don't really happen to really good football teams.
25:15 [SPEAKER_00]: And if you have a jackchones, maybe it becomes a scenario of where, you know, your defense is only, or your second area is only as bad as your weakest link. [SPEAKER_00]: And in today's game, he was pretty bad in certain situations. [SPEAKER_00]: So it'll, it'll be interesting to see how they frame that throughout the week as well. [SPEAKER_00]: This is an area that, you know, they have a lot of, they have some young players who they depend on and then they have some folks like him who he's got a fill in when they need him to and, you know, I don't think anybody is was knocking at the door to get him on their roster, but he's a depth piece to fill out when they have to go and to nickel and dime sometimes.
25:56 [SPEAKER_00]: So it's, you know, we saw that last week as well when that one guy who I'd never seen before [SPEAKER_00]: I guess the other question is, based on how they've played the last two games, the commanders at home in this game, I would say that commanders at home performance was also kind of sketchy, not great, that they didn't seem like the same team that beat Seattle and beat the Rams. [SPEAKER_00]: Are they coming back a little bit more to the mean do you think or were this were these just two tough matchups for them for whatever reason?
26:40 [SPEAKER_01]: I tend to lean. [SPEAKER_01]: I tend to want to give them the benefit is are doubt that it's more of an attrition thing and that. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, the buy, I think. [SPEAKER_01]: Shelvin said it last week, and I, I tend to agree that the buy is coming at a good time. [SPEAKER_01]: And that, hopefully, they can, you know, get a couple of these receivers back. [SPEAKER_01]: And the offense is clear. [SPEAKER_01]: It looks to me like the offense is definitely going to, um, it is kit is, um, [SPEAKER_01]: driving the ship at this point and that, you know, Olsen mentioned it today.
27:27 [SPEAKER_01]: And I kind of concur as that, you know, it looks like Kyle is just going on ahead and put the offense in Brock's hands. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's why we see the passing, you know, it seems like the old 30 rest is stat has gone by the wayside because it is [SPEAKER_01]: This is Brock's offense now, and if that's case, getting competent receivers around him, however, by every means they have to do, or have to, is going to be key to the our fortunes, moving forward.
28:11 [SPEAKER_00]: So I guess, you know, when you, for six wins, [SPEAKER_00]: pretty confident and pretty outspoken about this team is a really good team. [SPEAKER_00]: And so when you have a loss like this, you can kind of take a step back and go, okay, where we just ride and high off of the results and are there really something that they have to figure out? [SPEAKER_00]: And I think some of that is true. [SPEAKER_00]: When you're winning the way that you win and let's face it in that Seattle game, they're had to have been certain things to happen for them to win that game, [SPEAKER_00]: I do wonder how John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan look at the trade market today, prior instead of prior to last week, right?
29:04 [SPEAKER_00]: Cause, [SPEAKER_00]: if you'd got if you get through seven and oh here and maybe you get all of your people coming back. [SPEAKER_00]: Then you're like, okay, that's how we, you know, that that's how we're going to go for the rest of the season. [SPEAKER_00]: We just needed the rest. [SPEAKER_00]: We needed the break. [SPEAKER_00]: We needed to get our guys back and we're good to go. [SPEAKER_00]: And maybe now, based on what we saw from the defensive line, you go, okay, we're going to scratch out wide receiver as our number one need and we're going to change it. [SPEAKER_00]: And I imagine those things are probably both [SPEAKER_00]: A, you know, one A and one B anyways, but it does allow you to take a little bit of a temperature check on what the team does need, you know, last week, you know, had the the young defensive line and come through and it's like, oh, maybe this is the beginning of something and then this week, it's like, [SPEAKER_00]: Well, what had happened was, and there's nothing like there was literally nothing.
30:02 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember hearing Halten's name once today. [SPEAKER_00]: Nope, key on why I don't remember his name once. [SPEAKER_00]: Like almost to the point of where I was like, did these guys get hurt? [SPEAKER_00]: And the broadcast was just haven't said anything because I didn't hear them at all. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, why do I have one pressure? [SPEAKER_01]: Also have one pressure and James Thompson had one hurry and that was it, you know, so yeah, on 67 plays three pressures that's a, you know, that's it's a problem and it's something that it is definitely, you know, if this team wants to.
30:51 [SPEAKER_01]: go where we think that they're capable of going, it's definitely something that's gonna have to be addressed. [SPEAKER_01]: One thing that you kind of that was sparked by something you said earlier is that with Nick, and now the question for me now becomes, okay, well, [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it was just an over abundance of caution that caused him not to play this week, which, you know, like you say, it's six and oh, maybe we can understand, but if he doesn't play after the buy, then what?
31:36 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, right, that's um, it becomes, you know, that's uh, that is going to be something to watch during the by week. [SPEAKER_01]: And then also, and also, um, I want your opinion on do they or do they not bring somebody a kicker in for the by week because, um, I think we, I think we officially have a pinnero problem. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think I mentioned on the last show, um, that, uh, Jake Moody was signed by the Ravens.
32:16 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if that means he's kicking for them or if he's like on the practice squad or something. [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, he's on the practice squad. [SPEAKER_00]: So that was five days ago. [SPEAKER_00]: Who is out there? [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they did this last year, right? [SPEAKER_00]: They said, Okay, who's out there? [SPEAKER_00]: Who's a professional kicker? [SPEAKER_00]: And then that's how they got Piniero. [SPEAKER_00]: So who is out there? [SPEAKER_00]: I don't that's not my expertise is to figure out who's still able to kick extra points. [SPEAKER_00]: Because they're not even really needed him to kick field goals this year. [SPEAKER_00]: It's really just been extra points. [SPEAKER_00]: And he's missed four. [SPEAKER_00]: And you know, shanahan's whole thing is like, I don't have I don't want to have to deal with these guys like I just make the stink and thing so we can move on and quit hurt my offense kind of thing so.
33:06 [SPEAKER_00]: Somebody somebody who keeps track of this stuff will have to put out a list I'm sure and we'll see that list of who are the available kickers for the Niners to bring in and one thing that they could improve on and we saw this today. [SPEAKER_00]: the Falcons had too long kickoff returns. [SPEAKER_00]: And that is one thing about Piniero is he has not mastered the new kickoff strategy, which is to either pin these guys, you know, underneath the five and kick it high. [SPEAKER_00]: I guess that's the strategy, right? [SPEAKER_00]: You want to kick it high and you want to make sure that you get it within between the zero and the five so that they don't have a lot of time to get down field.
33:55 [SPEAKER_00]: And he either kicks it way deep in the end zone or he kicks it in that spot, but not high enough. [SPEAKER_00]: And so we saw today to two good kickoff returns by the Falcons that set them up for decent field position. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, who I will we could probably look at the waiver wire from the beginning of the season to see which kickers got cut and those will be the guys for the nice look up. [SPEAKER_00]: But I do think that they have to bring someone in only for like Shanahan to just be like Got a light fire under this dude's ass and he said we can't mess with this stuff because you can't [SPEAKER_00]: Now, the Niners have had good teams where the kickers may have been not so great, but it's just because their offense was so good.
34:40 [SPEAKER_00]: They never really had to worry about it. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure this offense is that good to wear. [SPEAKER_00]: They're not going to need some money kicks late in the season, especially coming around the playoffs. [SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to need somebody to just knock them down. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe they don't need the 55 yard field goal that [SPEAKER_00]: that some of these other teams need, but you just need consistency in that 35 to 50 range where chances have to worry about it. [SPEAKER_00]: And good luck finding someone like that on the waiver wire right now because the reason why those guys are available. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's it's a tough one. [SPEAKER_00]: It's it's one that you kind of wish. [SPEAKER_00]: Robby goal. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
35:21 [SPEAKER_00]: Where is our guy? [SPEAKER_00]: Man. [SPEAKER_00]: So I guess here's, here's the last thing and we didn't kind of wrap this up. [SPEAKER_00]: I saw George Kittle, I just caught a little bit of a clip of him saying something to the effect of yeah, you know, losing socks or whatever, but all it does is it just lights a fire and this we want to win so bad. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think some of it for guys like Kittle is like, [SPEAKER_00]: We know that there is a time limit on this team. [SPEAKER_00]: This current team as it is built today, we know there's a time limit on some of our guys. [SPEAKER_00]: They're one of the older teams in a league, if not the oldest.
36:02 [SPEAKER_00]: And so I don't think he is phased by a loss like this. [SPEAKER_00]: He knows that they're going to lose three or four or five games this year. [SPEAKER_00]: Them getting off to a six and a start is fantastic [SPEAKER_00]: stops the the worrying unless they have a losing streak kind of delays the worrying about you know positioning and playoffs and such because they they beat some good teams already. [SPEAKER_00]: But kiddo is a vet, guys like Trent Williams, guys like Mike Evans, Christian McCaffrey, like these are all guys who have been in the trenches for a very long time.
36:43 [SPEAKER_00]: And do you sort of see it the same way that that kiddo sees it, which is this is just kind of how football works and you sometimes you have to get, you have to come to the realization that you're just not going to walk on the field and roll everybody and it kind of just make you stop and go, oh yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we have to learn from this. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we are not an automated team, like we are good, but sometimes you need to kind of get kicked in the pants to remember that you still need to do all of the right things to win football games.
37:23 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you know, there's a portion of that, you know, the fact that they are, this is NFL and if, you know, when you turn the book all over four times and the other team doesn't, and then you have five or six penalties, the margin of error even for good teams, yeah, between, you know, a mediocre team is not [SPEAKER_01]: So great that you, you know, it's hard to overcome all of that. [SPEAKER_01]: And when you put the wire receiver deficit that they were at, um, [SPEAKER_01]: through that into the mix, there were a lot of things that they would have had to overcome to win this game and, you know, they just couldn't.
38:10 [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I don't know that the sky is necessarily falling, but then you put in the fact that it was, you know, a short week, you know, Monday night [SPEAKER_01]: cross country. [SPEAKER_01]: There were a lot of things going against the Niners to begin with, you know, to your schedule of off point. [SPEAKER_01]: And they would have they needed to play a perfect game or a very good game or four out of five game to overcome all of those things. [SPEAKER_01]: And they just didn't weren't able to. [SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, [SPEAKER_01]: That's where I'm at, whether it doesn't make me doubt what I've seen the past six weeks because they've been impressive and they've, you know, I could give all the caveats that you want that the Cardinals who might be better than we think they are.
39:13 [SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins were bad. [SPEAKER_00]: The dolphins got a W today. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I mean, it's um, [SPEAKER_01]: look, they beat the teams who were in front of them, and I think they are one of the best teams in the league. [SPEAKER_01]: And nothing to happen today really shook my faith in that. [SPEAKER_01]: They're clearly a lot of things they need to get cleaned up. [SPEAKER_01]: They need to, Nick Bosa would help a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: A healthy Nick Bosa fixes a lot of the things. [SPEAKER_01]: I believe that we're problems today.
39:55 [SPEAKER_01]: And healthy professional why receivers, even [SPEAKER_01]: we're just talking about guys like Demarker's Robinson, a healthy Christian Kirk who's get some reps, because he is, despite what the 49er fans have seen so far, I've seen enough of him throughout his career at Jacksonville in [SPEAKER_01]: Arizona and in Houston to know that when he is healthy, he's a good player. [SPEAKER_01]: Being healthy, it's his problem. [SPEAKER_01]: Debo is a good, you know, so let's we start getting these back and he's guys back in Evans.
40:36 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm [SPEAKER_01]: knock on wood, I hope that he, you know, because anytime we were talking about Achilles tightness, it just, you know, we've had, you know, like I said before, in the NBA, the last few seasons there were a spade of them, and then with Drake, we had it here with us that that, there was a saga for those who, as we remember 2003, there was Achilles tightness, [SPEAKER_01]: all the way through the season that he was dealing with, which culminated in the Super Bowl. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which at the time the question was I heard a doctor's interview and me and my doctor were talking about it.
41:21 [SPEAKER_01]: She's a runner and that [SPEAKER_01]: it's one of those things that you should rest. [SPEAKER_01]: So playing on it, we're not, they're not, you can't really say that, you know, a direct causal, but [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't help, you know, if you're dealing with sarnas and you continue to play on it, you do increase chances of a tearing. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's something to keep in mind with evidence. [SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be, that's going to be an ongoing story throughout the season. [SPEAKER_01]: But. [SPEAKER_01]: I can see help coming. [SPEAKER_01]: All of them don't have to be healthy at the same time for this offense to work.
42:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Brock has shown us that. [SPEAKER_01]: So there's a while, this is disappointing. [SPEAKER_01]: We weren't, I never thought we were going 17 at all. [SPEAKER_01]: No, so, you know, it's just hard to play that game [SPEAKER_01]: in August, well, what games are they lose? [SPEAKER_01]: It's just hard to say. [SPEAKER_01]: So this was one of them, and they'll take their buy. [SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully some guys will get health hopefully Nick comes back and things will look better. [SPEAKER_01]: And then we've got the raiders coming out of the buy. [SPEAKER_00]: So down, that's the 21 to three against the raiders.
42:46 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, certainly. [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to talk about a get-right game, [SPEAKER_01]: that is a tailor may get right game. [SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, all in all, it's a great first seven games. [SPEAKER_01]: This will notwithstanding. [SPEAKER_01]: And now we can get to buy and look forward to the second half of the season. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, and the other thing is you look around the league and you look at teams who are super duper impressive. [SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, we think that the Rams and the Seahawks they're gonna be there at the end, especially the Seahawks, just because the defense is, I think, gonna be, you know, we'll see about Sam Darnold and, you know, they were supposed to activate Zach Sharberney this week, but he did not get activated.
43:37 [SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why I know this is because I, [SPEAKER_00]: drafted him and immediately put him on IR on like three of my fantasy teams and I was like this is the week nope not the week but we we think that they're going to be there at the end we think that the Rams are going to figure it out and get better and we mentioned some teams last time of you know who's out there for that you're really really worried about the one that we didn't mention or I don't remember who mentioned it but we may not have [SPEAKER_00]: And they kind of are just so much of a different team when Caleb is healthy is the Chicago Bears. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think they are the one team in the NFC where I'm like, hmm.
44:20 [SPEAKER_00]: that is a team to kind of be worried about if you're if you're looking at the Niners because you know, of course, Green Bay and Detroit, like they're going to be, but they have flaws that you think that if you're like, oh, yeah, Kyle and company can figure out how to exploit them. [SPEAKER_00]: We talked about Minnesota. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, Minnesota beat a pretty bad cold team 16 to 10 today. [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, they're they're doing what they can offensively. [SPEAKER_00]: but you look all around the league in one game tonight chiefs and c-hawks like that will be one that I think a lot of people who watch the nine years will have their eyes on not only because the c-hawks, but you know for whatever reason the last two times we've been in the Super Bowl we've played pat pat my home so [SPEAKER_00]: That's another one that's like, oh, this might be the year again for us and the chief for like, hey, guess who's guess who's back us and we're like, oh gosh, the chiefs again.
45:13 [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, this is something in in week six that that you you think about, but yes, so we'll figure out what we're going to do next week, nine is run a buy. [SPEAKER_00]: If there's something to talk about, we we may we could do a more of a newsworthy show. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I imagine. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, if there's any news or anything coming out, we can probably do something, but otherwise they don't have a game. [SPEAKER_00]: So we don't have to record next weekend. [SPEAKER_00]: But um, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Anyways, this is uh, I'm going to kind of go by what Kiddlestead and this is just a little bit of like a, hey, you know, just this light fire under our rear ends a little bit more.
45:57 [SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully that they can get through the buy and come back ready to go. [SPEAKER_00]: And usually, you know, I think they can get pretty hot coming out of the buy and it gives Kyle, you know, the NFL sicko that he is to just, you know, prepare a little bit more than he probably was able to prepare this week. [SPEAKER_00]: So all right. [SPEAKER_00]: That is it from here. [SPEAKER_00]: So we'll be back at some point if not next week, then of course after the Raiders game, but hopefully there will be some news for us to talk about and breakdown. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, you know, 6 and 1 is still really, really good, especially going into the buy.
46:39 [SPEAKER_00]: For Rod, I am double G. Thanks to the folks in the chat like my guy Brian Rwano and Wayne Wayne wants to know by the way, why would a team put a kicker on the right is going. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, good question. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe there's some, maybe there's some issues in in Raven's land with kickers that are far worse than than what we what we are experiencing right now. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_00]: I've been following the Raven's kicking situation. [SPEAKER_00]: So all right. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll see you when we see you piece out.
