0:10 [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back to we want winners the rare mid week episode and the reason why I wanted to do this mid week episode is one We didn't have an episode of Thompson the Clark this week because Brad was on vacation last week. [SPEAKER_00]: He was actually in the Bay Area. [SPEAKER_00]: I got tag out with him a little bit and and also [SPEAKER_00]: Rodney are not coming back Monday night after Washington in San Francisco because I am going to be at the Valkyries game and on Valkyries duty, but we will come back on Tuesday with our normal show recapping the 49ers in Washington and whatever happens from from from from the end of the game to the next day.
0:58 [SPEAKER_00]: So, [SPEAKER_00]: we'll do that next week on Tuesday. [SPEAKER_00]: So we wanted to get something out and we've been talking about doing this in any ways, which is reviewing, we're just giving our thoughts on Colin Kaepernick's new memoir, The Paralys fight, which we both have read. [SPEAKER_00]: But this also gives us an opportunity to do like a mid week update about what's going on with this team. [SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't [SPEAKER_00]: But what are you hearing from like the national media about the 49ers? [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure that people think they're for real for real, but there's definitely some, you know, beating the Rams and Seattle and Denver has definitely opened some eyes across the national prognosticators.
1:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, and a couple things. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a good name on names, but there are three separate content creators or pollcasters that I listen to that freely admitted that up until the Seattle game, they hadn't even watched the 49ers, I mean, which is again, always my challenge with national reporters [SPEAKER_01]: you can really be dialed in on 32 teams. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just impossible for, I've always said that, you know, for most national piecasters, like, let's like take Steven A.
2:36 [SPEAKER_01]: There's no way in the hell, he knows more about 49ers than you or I do. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, that's impossible. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, and then some of those guys just don't even watch games anymore, and you can tell by the way that they, um, They're commented people always talk is who, but it's different. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you people talking about how to check in, um, Charles. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't watch the lead anymore. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, it's because it's just, I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, [SPEAKER_00]: was actually about the league and not just about one team, like think about how many games you have to grind and how quickly you can get through all of those games.
3:22 [SPEAKER_00]: Like that's a lot of work. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I get it for basketball. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a little different because not all of those games are on the same day. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you can kind of split them up a little bit, but still it's a lot of work. [SPEAKER_00]: So I completely [SPEAKER_00]: But I think you can also tell based on the first game of the season where everyone was anointing the Rams as the Super Bowl champion from the preseason. [SPEAKER_00]: When the Niners beat them, that should have been the alarm to those folks to go like, okay, I probably do need to pay attention to these guys. [SPEAKER_00]: They just whooped on the Rams. [SPEAKER_00]: So while I get it, there are clues there that say, hey man, you guys should probably pay attention to this football team.
4:09 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I guess I, there are, you know, could get in on the other side of the spectrum. [SPEAKER_01]: There are people who have been talking up to Niners. [SPEAKER_01]: And those are the people I respect. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when we talk about whoops, and I know this is not a whos podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: But Zach Low is just crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like a psychopedia about the league. [SPEAKER_01]: And then, for football, me and the times is just [SPEAKER_01]: She's awesome in terms of her depth of knowledge about the league. [SPEAKER_01]: So it can be done, but you get to a certain point, like Stephen A. Smith, he is a personality. [SPEAKER_01]: I remember back in the day, you've seen a listen to him back, we're talking.
4:52 [SPEAKER_01]: 25 years ago when, you know, the SPM radio was a thing and he'd be on with with Chuck and Tony and he was a journalist and it was he was in the weeds that way. [SPEAKER_01]: But certain senses have changed and you know, [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not throwing stones because like you say it is a lot of work and he has necessarily have to do that to do his job. [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have to be in the weeds and know about the 49ers [SPEAKER_01]: Finally, you know, you beat the Broncos who was supposed to be good with the thing of it is, I think not taking any credit away from the 49ers at all, but [SPEAKER_01]: all of those teams in different ways have been flawed and look you played a team that's in front of you.
5:58 [SPEAKER_01]: But the Rams, you know, they weren't right coming into the season. [SPEAKER_01]: They had a whole bunch of injuries. [SPEAKER_01]: We played the Broncos with a leaky offense and missing two corners. [SPEAKER_01]: And then Seattle, [SPEAKER_01]: That was a mess and you know both it was a messy. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a sloppy game for both teams But the Niners came out and they're five and oh Full stop so there's no because they it's not like they they don't have who they're you know Going off to want to you know taking getting guys off to couch to play receiver [SPEAKER_01]: I got a call today about coming to try and out.
6:38 [SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, everybody is dealing with the same thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And they have personal fear, rock priorities playing great. [SPEAKER_01]: The defense is, [SPEAKER_01]: way better than the golfensive line is way better than we thought coming in. [SPEAKER_01]: So there are a lot of positive stories with the Niners and even though it is, you know, I am just conservative by nature and I'm really, I'm not just really not the guy, even as a 49er fan who is going to be booking [SPEAKER_01]: I just know that three months is a long time and a lot of things can happen on the way to the Super Bowl for us, for other teams.
7:31 [SPEAKER_01]: So why I am optimistic, you know, I'm always cautiously so yeah, and we're caught, I mean sports fans are, I would say, die hard sports fans. [SPEAKER_00]: You're kind of cautious. [SPEAKER_00]: because you you've been hurt so many times like imagine if you were a imagine if you're Cleveland Browns fan right and let's say the Browns had won a few games in a row you're happy for the moment but you're like oh I mean I'm not expecting anything because I just expect that they're going to let me down at some point like that I think that's how every sports fan is except for my except for the Dodgers right now they're just all [SPEAKER_00]: they're possibly going to get swept by the brewers.
8:18 [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, you guys, there's a reason why you have a payroll that is three times higher than the brewers. [SPEAKER_00]: You should still win this series because you have you pay a $450 million payroll. [SPEAKER_00]: But no, there, I think they're a little sad right now. [SPEAKER_01]: It's different because you hear 49er fans. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's, I have to remind myself that a lot of these fans are new fans. [SPEAKER_01]: And I, because I [SPEAKER_01]: When, you know, and again, so it was pride, pre-social media, so you really only had the newspaper, but we got jaded to the point where the regular season, we had shipping off the regular season, and we just expected to, um, [SPEAKER_01]: with the regular season.
9:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And even if we didn't, we expected to turn it on in the playoffs. [SPEAKER_01]: And because that was just our experience that, you know, we're going to get to the Super Bowl if Joe doesn't get hurt or, you know, they're the defense, the runny game because it was always back in those days. [SPEAKER_01]: The defense was what was the litmus test because you knew what was in the offense we're going to do. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it's different now. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I get it. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of fun to watch 40 out of fans being all pumped up about a five and a start. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's wonderful. [SPEAKER_01]: But I just, like you [SPEAKER_00]: So I guess let's talk about kind of what's going on with the team.
9:57 [SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about the injury thing in the at the end because I think that's probably the most interesting thing right now is when are we going to get some of these guys back. [SPEAKER_00]: Drey. [SPEAKER_00]: We pretty much thought that he would get suspended. [SPEAKER_00]: He did get suspended. [SPEAKER_00]: He appealed his suspension and they were like, nope, well, you just suspended, but you know what's interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think fans are trying to look at it this way is that he missed half the game. [SPEAKER_00]: And now he's missing another full game. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's really like a game in a half suspension. [SPEAKER_00]: And then people are also looking at who's the, who's the Rams guy who punch the other dude from Buffalo.
10:37 [SPEAKER_00]: He only got one game. [SPEAKER_00]: And so people are trying to go, well, that's not fair. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's, it's an imperfect system. [SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, like we said, Dre has, has crossed the line a couple of times. [SPEAKER_00]: So that probably hurts his argument [SPEAKER_00]: You know so they're gonna be without him. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, you know, I don't know how they were going to plan for Jaden Daniels as far as who's going to be keeping an eye on him and how Jray plays into that, but [SPEAKER_00]: They're the people behind him or probably not faster than Drey, so that could be a problem with the commanders.
11:28 [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, we're going to miss him, but I think if there is a bright side. [SPEAKER_00]: it gives him it forces him to rest and it forces him to kind of like take a week off a week in which he cannot get injured and so then you push it into the following week and he can come back and maybe he gets a little bit of a refresher. [SPEAKER_00]: It's like an extra by week for Dre to me. [SPEAKER_00]: And with a team like ours, when it comes to these injuries, the extra by week on a week in which you're five and oh, it's probably not the worst thing in the world.
12:14 [SPEAKER_00]: Like I understand Drey is a competitor and he doesn't want to miss any games and he's gonna show his value because he's also playing for contracts and future contracts. [SPEAKER_00]: But the selfish fan in me is like, okay, we can let him rest and someone else would get those reps. [SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, they could lose this game, I guess I wouldn't pick them to lose, especially being at home, but I, if we're looking kind of the long term picture here, I don't really mind him missing a game, you know, this early in the season, if we think about it from the perspective of, you know, if it allows him to continue to play longer throughout the season.
12:58 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I can't remember if he's all friends together. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it came from him for the last week or two weeks ago. [SPEAKER_01]: Justin Jefferson was nicked up and he could have played, but they held him out against the dolphins. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, using the exact same logic, you're using is it's basically like your table. [SPEAKER_01]: They feel confident enough to take a beat to dolphins without Justin Jefferson. [SPEAKER_01]: So they just decided to go ahead and rest. [SPEAKER_01]: And so I think, you know, they also are five and a team or four and a whatever it was at the time. [SPEAKER_01]: But if you're thinking long term in those opportunities present themselves, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: So, the next thing that I wanted to talk about is this wide receiver's room.
13:48 [SPEAKER_00]: The Jordan Watkins, Brandon Cooks, Mike Evans, who is balling out with this crazy injury, and Jacob Cowling, those are your four wide receivers, as you head into this Monday night game. [SPEAKER_00]: Uh, it makes, it makes me wonder a little bit because we've talked about CMC, and she's not getting the same usage, which is again, you are hoping that that means that he's going to be fresher throughout the season. [SPEAKER_00]: I kind of want to, I would love to see them play around with him in the slot a little bit, you know, play around with him and eat like maybe he is just a decoy, but just the fact, just you have K-Lon black, line K-Lon black up in the backfield.
14:43 [SPEAKER_00]: put CMC out in the slot and just make them react and just make them go, huh, what's going on here? [SPEAKER_00]: I would love to see some of that stuff and you would think that they could do it. [SPEAKER_00]: What they might do, they probably are just going to play more two tight ends and put Kittle in a similar position. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I was just trying to think of what they could do creatively because I mean, there's one receiver you trust there and that's it right now. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and that is something I've been saying for years, kind of, is I believe that he could be a pro bowler at in the slide, if he just played that position.
15:25 [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, and I've also often said that if you want to not limit his usage, [SPEAKER_01]: but give him a lighter load that just, you know, receiver snaps are not the same as running back snaps. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just fine. [SPEAKER_01]: So that is a way, if you trust black, that's a way to keep him on the field while preserving him to a certain extent. [SPEAKER_00]: So [SPEAKER_00]: Radio Rahim, our guy Rahim Morris, I was reading Harrison Richis piece from the San Francisco Chronicle, Harrison Richa really talented young staff writer for the Chronicle and Shanahan had some really nice comments about Morris and their boys, they go back, you know, many, many years.
16:24 [SPEAKER_00]: And Shanahan said, he's been trying to keep Morris on the staff for years and years and years. [SPEAKER_00]: And Atlanta wasn't allowing it. [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't going to happen or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a stat that they mentioned and I thought this was interesting. [SPEAKER_00]: I just wanted to get your feedback on it as far as Morris's ability in the game planning aspect against different teams. [SPEAKER_00]: The 49ers use nickel package for over three fourths of their defensive snaps while using a base formation at the lowest rate of the season.
17:05 [SPEAKER_00]: So then they go into Seattle and they ran a base defense on 55% of the plays while using nickel just 40% of the time, which is their lowest of the season. [SPEAKER_00]: I take that to mean, and I don't know, it wasn't, you know, I didn't really go into the nuts and bolts of it, but I take that to mean that Morris has been able to game plan knowing [SPEAKER_00]: what the strengths are of the other team and you're putting the defense in the best position to try and take away those strengths. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, JSN, we know that he was one catch, one finger tips catch away from the game being tied and he just dropped the ball.
17:54 [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not saying that they stopped him in any way. [SPEAKER_00]: But just, I just, you know, that's not something that I necessarily see information about is the defense of coordinator adjusting in personnel so far one way and so far the other way in two separate weeks against two good teams, too. [SPEAKER_00]: It's, you know, but the teams play different football. [SPEAKER_00]: What do you think about when you hear those numbers? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it is, um, it just goes to show you that, um, and we saw it, I don't, not to that extreme, but we saw the difference that a really smart defense coordinator could have last year, because I mean, [SPEAKER_01]: They got to the point where it was just silly who, um, solid was having to line up out there, um, you know, he just body after body going down and he's just able to throw guys in there and be able to stand up with the podium and say, look.
18:54 [SPEAKER_01]: We know what we are and we know what we're going to be able to do and we know we're not going to be able to do, they're going to probably between the 20s, we're going to get gas, but on third down, we need these guys to step up and in, in four quarters, we need them to step up and he was able to, like you said, put the guys in position to make plays when it mattered and. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, Ray Moore is dealing with a significantly more stacked deck than solid was and he's got several young guys playing very well, which again was not the case always last season.
19:42 [SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's one accredited. [SPEAKER_01]: to Morris and, you know, he's been in, you know, Connie's kind of like the defensive, you know, he hasn't had to success to Kyle's head, but he has been a coordinator in the league for a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he started young. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think he got his first hit coaching job again with Tampa when he was in his mid-32, kind of like Kyle. [SPEAKER_01]: So he's been a high level coach. [SPEAKER_01]: in the league for a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: And it shows, I mean, it shows how that kind of time on task pays dividends.
20:24 [SPEAKER_00]: Why do you think, and this is this is Sala as well, these guys are dynamite, dynamite [SPEAKER_00]: and yet when they do get that head coaching position it it's not it hasn't been great and I wonder like how much of it obviously some of it is [SPEAKER_00]: the open jobs in the NFL are almost always going to be bad once. [SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to, you know, it's rare that a good job opens up because the good coaches are going to stay in those jobs. [SPEAKER_00]: So I'd like to think that is it is a lot of it is that just that the openings are just so far and few between so few and far between that they're often just bad situations.
21:17 [SPEAKER_00]: But I remember Bill Simmons and Cousin Sal, that you used to talk about, if you know baseball, there's a statistic called war, which stands for wins against replacement. [SPEAKER_00]: And it is designed to give you how much better is this player than an average player in this lineup. [SPEAKER_00]: And so he created one, and he called it warme, [SPEAKER_00]: wins against Rahim Morris, meaning like how many how many losses or how many wins are you losing because Rahim Morris is your head coach. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think, you know, I mean, you look at Salah, he goes to Tennessee and, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, it's not like he can just snap his fingers and turn that thing around.
22:08 [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to take time, it's going to take building, it's going to take the general manager and him working together or the team president working together to make good selections. [SPEAKER_00]: I think there's, as impressed I was with Cam Ward last year, I was like, hmm, I don't [SPEAKER_00]: these guys haven't been able to step into positions and succeed. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm fine. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we watch them call defenses. [SPEAKER_00]: Demico, I think the what the Texans are like one in four right now, but they had a good season last year. [SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, a lot of times it is just the opening and and the pieces that are there.
22:50 [SPEAKER_00]: But those guys are such dynamite coordinators to then go into your own team and take over your own team and be unsuccessful. [SPEAKER_00]: Then [SPEAKER_00]: that, oh, you can coach a good defense, but you cannot coach your own good team. [SPEAKER_00]: And I say that because Rahim Morris falls into a 49er job where the 49ers are consistently competitive. [SPEAKER_00]: So you go from your head job, which is always going to be a bad one. [SPEAKER_00]: And because of the friends that you [SPEAKER_00]: when you would go back to being a coordinator, you're following to really great job. [SPEAKER_00]: So that whole thing of good coach versus bad coach, it seems to be so much reliant on the spot that you end up in.
23:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I have often pushed back, because there was somebody talking about that, you know, about how solid is not a good hit coach. [SPEAKER_01]: I've pushed back on that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like 10 years, just once seven games, three times, he did it twice. [SPEAKER_01]: in his three years there. [SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, when you were talking about taking poop and making poop salad, he was able to do that. [SPEAKER_01]: And when you go a step further, [SPEAKER_01]: the owner would he Johnson kind of forced Aaron Rogers on him. [SPEAKER_01]: He apparently had different plans of who he wanted to be his quarterback and he had the quarterback just assigned to him.
24:25 [SPEAKER_01]: So I think [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you look at the ownership and there's a reason why these teams are perpetually bad. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not an accident that the jets are a, a, a, a, a, um, [SPEAKER_01]: a dumpster fire, the raiders, how is a reason that they haven't done anything since 2003. [SPEAKER_01]: This is how died. [SPEAKER_01]: They haven't been, it was because of Mark Davis. [SPEAKER_01]: So, and it's one of those things where it's a fine line for somebody like Solomon is, do you wait for the right opportunity?
25:17 [SPEAKER_01]: somebody like the enemy is a great example. [SPEAKER_01]: You can spend a whole lot of, you know, when the chiefs were hot hot, he wanted to be picky about getting a head coaching job which it is his right to do. [SPEAKER_01]: But when the balloon falls off, you might not get that $30 million win fall that comes with being a head coach. [SPEAKER_01]: So, and that's my thing, it's, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: People were talking about solid and taking that job. [SPEAKER_01]: That's another $30 million guarantee. [SPEAKER_01]: You talk about feathering your nest egg.
25:58 [SPEAKER_01]: You gotta take that job because if he flames out in three years, guess what? [SPEAKER_01]: He'll be able to go right back to be getting somebody's defense coordinator making four or five, six million dollars a year. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, stacking away some cash and getting the opportunity to run your own thing and I'm sure all of them believe that when they go to those bad teams, it's going to be different. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure the floor when he went to the car knows he knows the history, but he feels like he's going to be the guy to turn it around the same thing with the other of the floor in, um, [SPEAKER_01]: Las Vegas.
26:44 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure he believes he's going to be the guy that turns it all around because these guys are competitors and they lack out there trying to lose, but like the jet example and then the Titans example, sometimes they had it's a lot more that they're trying to overcome than just the players on the field. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's take a look at practice today. [SPEAKER_00]: So here are the [SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans, Debo, Garrett Wallow, Nick Bosa, even though Shanhand still said there's an outside chance that he can play on Monday, but he did not practice today with this calf injury.
27:24 [SPEAKER_00]: James Thompson, Marcus Seagull. [SPEAKER_00]: Those who were limited in practice, Kyle use check, Upton Stout, Christian Kirk, Colton McKivitz, who is sick. [SPEAKER_00]: I just saw also that Matt Mayoco said that, uh, uh, who, great, uh, was it, um, [SPEAKER_00]: It was Grace and Halton did not practice today because of his quadriceps, but I haven't heard if that is worrisome for him come Monday. [SPEAKER_00]: So as much as we can't wait for these guys to get back, they're still dealing with a lot of these injuries.
28:06 [SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I was wondering about Bosa, because [SPEAKER_00]: this has been a thing with him with the injuries. [SPEAKER_00]: He's obviously a great, great player when he does play. [SPEAKER_00]: We also know how his brother's body has maybe, you know, gone against him over these years. [SPEAKER_00]: I wonder what the Niners do with Nick Bosa in the long run. [SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, a healthy Nick Bosa on the field for the 49ers is a plus is awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: But when you cannot count on him from week to week, [SPEAKER_00]: you're paying him a whole lot of money to be injured and I wonder if there comes a time in the near future where they really have to make a decision about how much they can pay him for his, you know, for his, I guess, inconsistencies of being able to be out on the field.
29:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, [SPEAKER_01]: That's interesting because we saw this play out with BA to a certain extent when you they don't seem to be very good at making a hard decision and it would be interesting what. [SPEAKER_01]: because if you think back, they had deals on the table for BA before they had to be signing. [SPEAKER_01]: And they valued him at more than what the teams were willing to trade. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's going to be the case. [SPEAKER_01]: You're not going to get full value for Nick Bolsen. [SPEAKER_01]: If you decide you want to move on, you're not going to get what you think you should get [SPEAKER_01]: And I get net for lots of reasons to injury thing, the fact that the other teams know that you're trying to get off him.
30:08 [SPEAKER_01]: So they're going to offer you 50 75 or 75 cent on the dollar. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's just what it's going to be. [SPEAKER_01]: So that will be interesting to see how that plays out. [SPEAKER_01]: And what I am interested in from a both a standpoint. [SPEAKER_01]: And you look. [SPEAKER_01]: at least defense of why and who had been here in the past, they seem like they go deal with injuries here and they go on and, you know, Eric Arsett. [SPEAKER_01]: all the injury histories, he went like two straight years playing all 17 games in Jacksonville.
30:52 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, um, same thing with Giovanna Kinnler, you know, he got hurt in his outfit season. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, but he played for like two straight seasons without missing the game. [SPEAKER_01]: So there's something in the water here. [SPEAKER_01]: We have gone through this long enough and I don't believe in [SPEAKER_01]: You know, rather than investing in a state-of-the-art performance and sports science to, you know, department, we're out, you know, our leaders are out in trailer parks doing whatever they do with their money rather than making sure that right down the street from Stanford, [SPEAKER_01]: you know 45 miles away from Cal UCSF San Francisco has one of the best sports medicine programs.
31:48 [SPEAKER_01]: They're all they're surrounded. [SPEAKER_01]: but can't figure out how to put a system in place to keep these guys healthy. [SPEAKER_01]: That's just, it is so frustrating. [SPEAKER_01]: So I know, there'd be a part of me as Nick Bowsk is clear that they're not gonna extend it or he's not gonna get the money that he wants. [SPEAKER_01]: They maybe wouldn't mind seeing what it looks like somewhere else. [SPEAKER_01]: I would extend go because he's a great player, but like you made the point that he, [SPEAKER_01]: If you can't, you know, the best ability is availability and he or they have not been able to keep him healthy. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, one thing I wanted to point out about the injury report Thursdays injury report.
32:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Did you notice that Mike Evans, it's a brave and a killease? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what is up with that? [SPEAKER_01]: That dude, I've been saying if you recall me a hater, lower body injuries and Mike Evans for the past seven years, there are things and he really didn't start missing games until three years ago and he missed more in those three years and he had basically put it to the rest of his entire career. [SPEAKER_01]: 34 years old with a history of lower. [SPEAKER_01]: body injuries, growing, hamstring, now killies, and you see, you know, as a basketball fan, I know that you know, you see both of the calf, you see, [SPEAKER_01]: Kirk, Kirk, any time I see calf, I, you know, you want to take care of that with chick gloves, because we've just seen, you know, in the NBA, especially calf, turning to Achilles, turning into out for the season, um, happen at a alarming rate.
33:40 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so that is concerning that somebody who, [SPEAKER_01]: as dealt with, you know, lower body injuries before a long time. [SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of, you know, for a lot of years, he would be on the injury report, but he would show up and play. [SPEAKER_01]: And to this point, he has showed up and played here. [SPEAKER_01]: But it just bears watching that it's a bad cocktail when somebody has those type of injuries and they've got Dr. Nick from the Simpsons, you know, tending to them as a team doctor. [SPEAKER_01]: It's um, [SPEAKER_01]: which we will get to in the, you know, in our next discussion.
34:22 [SPEAKER_01]: It's just a, it's a, it's a bad mix. [SPEAKER_01]: But I hope, obviously, I hope to work out for those guys. [SPEAKER_01]: And we also saw that Christian Kirk was activated today. [SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully, that, I mean, that doesn't mean he's going to play this week, but hopefully that means help is on the way. [SPEAKER_00]: You get Kirk back. [SPEAKER_00]: you get Debo back, you get to Marcus back. [SPEAKER_00]: Then you can tell Mike Evans to just, go hang out in the pool for a couple of weeks and just let him mend as well. [SPEAKER_00]: Though, it's kind of weird, like sometimes when these guys, like they have such a learned or like their body, it's almost like a memory, like the calluses that they build by, [SPEAKER_00]: getting tackled or by you know playing this this violent game where you're just constantly there there's just some sort of touching or pushing or or bumping.
35:27 [SPEAKER_00]: And then when when you kind of take that away from them, it's something like they got to get their body ready again like I see this in in other sports where you know, you know, [SPEAKER_00]: If you're not active in that other sport as much, it's almost like your body has to like kind of get ready for it all over again. [SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that's just Evans's thing is like, I know that this is a four month sprint and my body is going to hurt, but it is, it is also part of the process for me as long as obviously as long as injury like real injury injury doesn't exist. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, you know, and he said he has said that, [SPEAKER_00]: The reason he came to San Francisco is he thought he was the missing piece.
36:10 [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: And I will tell you, if he is the missing piece and this year, if the 49ers win the Super Bowl, Mike Evans could be injured all year next year and I don't give a damn. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, and in like you to your earlier point, if you get some of these guys back, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, the old management is a dirty word, but I would manage his snaps because I am more concerned about him being available at December in January then I necessarily am in October in November, you know, if if this team is who we think it is then [SPEAKER_01]: It's more important for him to, again, it's hard to play those games because a lot of things can happen between now and the end of the season, to, you know, for you, it's kind of arrogant to think that you can just, you know, play like you're going to be in the playoffs and I have to play to get to the playoffs.
37:17 [SPEAKER_01]: So it's a, it's a, it's a, um, [SPEAKER_01]: it's a balance. [SPEAKER_01]: What has been interesting to me is this, you know, and it's all fan-generated in the media talks about it because I guess it's hot is, you know, what the actual one, what the trademark it is, and what if anything the 49ers would be inter-wood, [SPEAKER_01]: consider trading. [SPEAKER_01]: And for who? [SPEAKER_01]: That is, you know, I, I love to hear that talk. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like Duan Jennings just makes perfect sense. [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know that the Vikings are in the market to trade. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know what the 49ers would actually be willing to park with for him.
38:03 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's really frustrating on the sidelines. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: And so that's a fit. [SPEAKER_01]: Then you hit you guys like, you know, from a fantasy standpoint, I just say, you know, guys like Quentin Johnson, who happens to be on several of my teams, who has all the measurables, but has just not, it hasn't happened. [SPEAKER_01]: I guess you could put Brian Thomas Jr. in that same conversation, [SPEAKER_01]: I just think that I don't think the Jaguars are going to give Thomas away. [SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't know if he'd be willing to pay what it would cost for, you know, upside.
38:44 [SPEAKER_01]: And then I was listening to Albert Breard and he made a good point that when you look [SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of bare now, but as you said, if Dbo once Dbo's back, once Kirk is back, once Robinson is back, if you've, and then you've got Evans [SPEAKER_01]: Where do you put this receiver that you're trading for? [SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, second question, what are you willing to sacrifice in terms of draft capital for a temporary need? [SPEAKER_01]: Those are great questions.
39:26 [SPEAKER_01]: did I just don't know the answer to. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: All right. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about this cappernick book. [SPEAKER_00]: We the book has been out for exactly a month, I believe. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think the book was like very close. [SPEAKER_00]: The release date was very close to like 10 years anniversary of him kneeling that one time the preseason that kind of nobody even paid attention to the first time they did it. [SPEAKER_00]: And so he finally came out with this book and I know it's been a long journey for him. [SPEAKER_00]: I think he said, I listened to him on a higher learning with Van Lathen and my girl Rachel from the Bachelor. [SPEAKER_00]: I forget Rachel's last name.
40:07 [SPEAKER_00]: She's like my favorite Bachelor at Contestant. [SPEAKER_00]: And Colin. [SPEAKER_00]: You know he he he just said like the world had changed when he first started writing the book to win he finished it like in the he started they started writing like 2020 and everyone knows what happened in 2020. [SPEAKER_00]: with the pandemic and then George Floyd and like all these things that were happening and so I think it kind of changed a little bit of the perspective for him and what he was writing about. [SPEAKER_00]: The book is a pretty quick read. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not even 300 pages. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think. [SPEAKER_00]: And if you are a 48 [SPEAKER_00]: I probably wanted a little bit more of those hardball teams that wasn't the point of the book necessarily, but there were some memorable moments and some good moments from that time.
41:01 [SPEAKER_00]: Like this this podcast is named after our old Facebook. [SPEAKER_00]: page and those were probably the best days of the Facebook page when it came to the 49ers and Rick Feinberg RF like posting every day just like different photos and memes and and the page was just popping and [SPEAKER_00]: that like that was like a really fun time to go back and and remember because you like you know when we go back and think about historical 49ers teams was go back to those Super Bowl teams and that was like a super close number six.
41:44 [SPEAKER_00]: That's what that might not know. [SPEAKER_00]: What do you think was a closer number six that one or the first or the first [SPEAKER_01]: I think I believe those hard-watch teams were just better than those early shanna hand teams. [SPEAKER_01]: You have a real conversation between the 2013 and those hard-watch teams, I think. [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I think that we were close, close, and one of the guys who was like, it's the worst look. [SPEAKER_01]: to me in that book is one of the reasons why it's how we find ourselves at the goal line and our number one wire receiver is Michael Crabtree.
42:33 [SPEAKER_01]: That is just, it makes no sense to me that that was allowed to happen, it just, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: And then subsequently a Michael Crabfield, Richard Sherman play away from I believe two championships, but yeah, it was those were great times and you know, it was, you know, I guess it depends on who you are, but you know, hardball, he is definitely in a choir taste, but I [SPEAKER_01]: loved his energy and I loved his, um, the style of play that he brought in.
43:21 [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I don't have to read, re-literated our guy. [SPEAKER_01]: We want winners. [SPEAKER_01]: He basically took a microcinctal [SPEAKER_01]: into a, you know, a double G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G. G [SPEAKER_01]: Um, not afraid to take the ball out of Alex Smith's Alex Smith's hand and give it to him when the time came.
44:17 [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it was a great time. [SPEAKER_01]: And like I said, we didn't win a championship, but you know, they didn't talk about it a whole lot. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he talked about, [SPEAKER_01]: the leadership part and he's have heard him mention that several times on his tour, you know, being 23 years old and having to to answer the guys like just this myth and Mike Potty and it was just fun to hear those names of guys who I just enjoyed watching them play and, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: Pat Willis in a viral moment. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was just, it was just a fun fun team and a fun time.
45:01 [SPEAKER_01]: Even though we didn't, you know, ultimately get that six. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not, I don't happen to be a binary type of person. [SPEAKER_01]: I think you want to win the championships, obviously. [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't think that it's all or nothing or that those were necessary necessarily failures or something that those teams and players can't be proud of. [SPEAKER_01]: what they accomplished during that time. [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_01]: And they ran up against the Gutsy adult team, too, which we, you know, I know we're low as 49er fans to give them credit, but those were really good teams.
45:41 [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_00]: Alex Smith also gets a nice write-up in this book for helping out Kaepernick during this time when he was essentially replacing him. [SPEAKER_00]: So, [SPEAKER_00]: There are so many interesting things about cappernics life that come out in this book. [SPEAKER_00]: He was adopted at five months old, parents are white, of course. [SPEAKER_00]: Everyone knows that story. [SPEAKER_00]: The racial abuse he suffered as a child was kind of eye-raising. [SPEAKER_00]: And the non [SPEAKER_00]: I guess the non-answers he got from his community about that or maybe he wasn't comfortable of searching out the wise because of the community.
46:31 [SPEAKER_00]: I thought that was a really interesting part of his story. [SPEAKER_00]: So much so that I was really surprised to hear him talk about his parents and them. [SPEAKER_00]: kind of not being along with the ride. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about today, but early on, he describes, they didn't understand the kneeling, they didn't understand the Afro, they didn't understand a lot of the things that he was doing. [SPEAKER_00]: That was really interesting because it kind of like I was trying to put myself in his shoes and you know thinking that you come across this enlightening and you're [SPEAKER_00]: Opportunities to use your platform for what you perceive to be good.
47:21 [SPEAKER_00]: And the people who are closest to you are like, oh, you're just being influenced by these other people or, oh, you know, you're making us look bad or whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, wow, like they, at least this is his portrayal of his parents, they were not, they did not get what he was trying to do. [SPEAKER_00]: And maybe some of that is communication, but like this dude is famous at this time when these things are happening. [SPEAKER_00]: And it sounded like his parents were just not with with with with what he was with. [SPEAKER_01]: And open, you know, and more so than that, that's a story that in this case, and in our country, race is kind of a tabloom topic.
48:04 [SPEAKER_01]: But what was alarming to me and disappointing is just as parents, you. [SPEAKER_01]: at least I did in different ways, you know, my kids are black so it wasn't that, but being supportive of them even when you don't understand what time they're on and the things that matter to them. [SPEAKER_01]: I found it important as a parent to try to dial into their frequency and not be, you know, as I don't understand, that's my fault.
48:45 [SPEAKER_01]: And my job to try to understand what it is that sparks you or makes you excited about this thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, you know, if it's a, if it's, [SPEAKER_01]: Positive and negative are, you know, subjective, um, but [SPEAKER_01]: If it's something that they light up about, even if I don't understand it, I think I felt I've always felt feel to this date as a parent, it is my job to try to close the gap and make sure that they feel regardless of what it is, that they feel supported, they feel loved and that we can have honest conversations or that maybe I don't agree with [SPEAKER_01]: this that or whatever it is that it is, but I support you, you know regardless of we can have a disagreement about your kneeling or your afro and you might not understand why I feel the way I feel and again I don't know that this isn't true because he doesn't really go into detail about what his relationship [SPEAKER_01]: informative to know when he shares the one thing that you've you're loved and supported regardless, even if we don't see eye to eye on the politics of this thing and that you know it just it just seems and again I understand it there's two sides to every story so I don't know their side so I'm not going to
50:31 [SPEAKER_01]: If he feels this strongly, the fact that there are policemen in your family and their military, people in your family, I have never really saw this as a, or his stance as anti anything, you know, an anti-attachalize, not anti. [SPEAKER_01]: military, because I would think that if you are in the military, you or in a policeman, you would be against, you know, police misconduct, you wouldn't support people misusing their power, which is what this has always been about to me, is that [SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be out here, treat these people, even if they're criminals or what you perceive is criminal, then they kind of write to do process, you can't be out here holding court in the street, choking people out and killing them and shooting them just because, you know, for whatever reason, that is not okay and it is that, you know, for him to stand up.
51:40 [SPEAKER_01]: and say something that affects me because my black ass could be out here called up, you know, in behind, you know, whatever, and dealing with the police, I can relate to the fact that any time you see those likes, even if you aren't, I'm not no criminal. [SPEAKER_01]: I've never committed a crime in my life, but I know that every time I interact with the police, [SPEAKER_01]: death is on the bingo car. [SPEAKER_01]: That's just a fact. [SPEAKER_01]: So when you move in the world as a person of color, that is something that I can relate to.
52:21 [SPEAKER_01]: And I would hope that my friends of other races, even if they don't agree with that or they don't understand it, they would support [SPEAKER_01]: That behavior not being okay because if you love me you don't want me to be out here laying out on the street or with somebody choking me out [SPEAKER_01]: Just also whatever, because Las Vegas is a place where that happens. [SPEAKER_01]: They will be on that bullshit. [SPEAKER_01]: Did you just have to, you know, where are you looking at me? [SPEAKER_01]: I've had a cop say that to me in a 7 or 11. [SPEAKER_01]: What are you looking at me for? [SPEAKER_01]: Huh? [SPEAKER_01]: So, fine. [SPEAKER_01]: What the fuck? [SPEAKER_01]: I'm supposed to look down at the ground when you get there.
53:02 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Look out here. [SPEAKER_00]: Look out, you know, you know, the interesting thing. [SPEAKER_00]: I think, [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you always think about like how can some of somebody be in your shoes and the things that you feel and I think one of the most frustrating moments that I've had and it didn't even really hit me like right away, but I remember driving home from work and you have I had a long commute back then and I'm like right around the corner from my house and I get pulled over. [SPEAKER_00]: And, I mean, I was driving in residential areas like I couldn't be going any more than, you know, 20 miles an hour.
53:44 [SPEAKER_00]: And so when he pulls me over and he's asking me questions about where I was and I was like, I'm not sure understand. [SPEAKER_00]: You're aren't you pulling me over for something like you assume that I'm like that I missed a stop sign or something which I didn't. [SPEAKER_00]: But I just assume that he had [SPEAKER_00]: wanted to get me on like some like really, really medial traffic situation. [SPEAKER_00]: And he said, no, there was actually, they were actually looking for somebody in the neighborhood who matched my complexion. [SPEAKER_00]: And now here's the trick.
54:24 [SPEAKER_00]: It was dark outside. [SPEAKER_00]: So, how could they even really know what I had looked like from behind me in a car, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: And so after I kind of got home, and they're like, oh yeah, I'm sorry, you're not who we're looking for. [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, wow, that is an experience that some folks will just never have because [SPEAKER_00]: because of the color of their skin. [SPEAKER_00]: And [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that's one of those things where you cannot sit in somebody else's shoes, unless you've experienced, like, I would, it's almost like I wish somebody who was not a person of color could experience what that felt like, because then maybe they would understand a little bit more about why stuff like that is so troubling and, you know, cap, cap isn't [SPEAKER_00]: me that like you know we saw experiences you know when I'm when I'm a teenager and you see the Rodney King thing happened on TV and you're like and now I know a lot of television shows kind of turned that into a joke and Stan comedy turned that into a joke but that thing was they had video of that thing and you're like wow even though you have video and you see [SPEAKER_00]: you still don't get the answer right.
55:52 [SPEAKER_00]: And so that those are kind of the things that historically and so cap is he is learning about not learning, but he is in being enlightened about all these things and it just comes it comes into motion for him that he has to do something about it. [SPEAKER_00]: The story that I think really, really surprised me and I did not know this is the Nate Boyer story. [SPEAKER_00]: That was why so people remember Nate Boyer as the person that cap supposedly went to for hey, what should we do so that we don't offend people in what we are fighting for and Nate Boyer kneeled along with Kaepernick and Eric Reed.
56:41 [SPEAKER_00]: And I just thought like, oh, okay, this is a nice story. [SPEAKER_00]: Cap went to him for advice. [SPEAKER_00]: Nate Boyer was like, I got you. [SPEAKER_00]: And so, and we moved on, but as Cap tells the story, Nate Boyer and his people wanted to take credit for a lot of what Cap was doing. [SPEAKER_00]: And Cap and Eric Greed kind of just themselves from the Nate Boyer and his people. [SPEAKER_00]: That was really wild to read. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, it was, the thing was that it wasn't like he reached out to him. [SPEAKER_01]: He showed up and he talked to him and then, you know, he wanted to co-opt it.
57:22 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, that was, it was such a bizarre story that he is one of the people and I am so glad that you allowed us to kind of [SPEAKER_01]: talk about the topic, because I came at this, you know, and a completely different way. [SPEAKER_01]: And I was just, you know, when to talk about it from a football perspective, who were the worst look in the book and who were some good looks in Trent. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, boy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: The 40 diner. [SPEAKER_01]: Doctor. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: How how are you? [SPEAKER_01]: You going? [SPEAKER_01]: You're taking a love. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't feel leadership. [SPEAKER_01]: Jay, Jay, Jay, [SPEAKER_01]: and the whole 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000s, 2000 [SPEAKER_01]: I had forgot that part that they just kind of left him hanging out there in the wind with the allegations that he could on his team and Yadiyadiyada and then turns out his cap relay and I went back and looked up.
58:44 [SPEAKER_01]: Lynch, eventually, after it was all said and done, came forward and confirmed that they had told him that if he didn't opt out, that they were going to cut it. [SPEAKER_01]: So it wasn't like he. [SPEAKER_01]: with on the team, they had moved on from him and they were real slow in reporting that, which was kind of chicken shit, I thought as well. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, they didn't come out, a lot of people didn't come out looking great. [SPEAKER_01]: 40 to him. [SPEAKER_01]: As of yet, nobody has come out and defended themselves as Interfield owner, well, I guess they, you know, are both under, you know, a gag or what are based on the settlement they arrived at, but, um, [SPEAKER_01]: We know Trent, Trent Bawke, it is already confirmed that he is a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, and, and Jed hasn't done anything subsequently to, um, to, to, to, to beat that allegation that he doesn't know what to hell he's doing, um, yeah, why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why don't you know why [SPEAKER_00]: We remember how we felt about Jed at this time around this time because of the Harba situation.
1:00:11 [SPEAKER_00]: Picking Trent, Balky over Harba, you know, and then turning the team over to someone like Jim Tom. [SPEAKER_00]: Sula clearly like there was no plan really other than to just be like [SPEAKER_00]: we're going to be really, really bad and we don't want to bring anybody else in here because we're going to have to start over anyway. [SPEAKER_00]: So let's just give it to the, you know, it was sort of like, uh, [SPEAKER_01]: uh, a metal of like longevity for for him, uh, and it just, it just, it just, and it, it, it, it's spiral downhill, and that's what, you know, I took away from it is not only was Tom Su, uh, incompetent as a head coach, because clearly he was a great defensive eye coach, but that the staff that he was able to put together was, you know, cat tells a story about the receivers, [SPEAKER_01]: They couldn't make basic receiver adjustments.
1:01:13 [SPEAKER_01]: And it was just, they descended. [SPEAKER_01]: And we watched it in real time. [SPEAKER_01]: It just descended into an aptitude, you know, culminating in Chip Kelly, [SPEAKER_01]: And just a tune 14 season and as Kyle said it his opening press conference, you know, that they came into one of the worst rosters in the league. [SPEAKER_01]: It was just all bad. [SPEAKER_01]: It was all bad. [SPEAKER_01]: And we watched it happen in real time during this era. [SPEAKER_00]: So let's just quickly talk about kind of the the blackballing piece of this because [SPEAKER_00]: This is the part of the story that I'm just so, I guess I shouldn't be that surprised because I understand how this works.
1:02:07 [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I went to San Jose State and you walk into the middle of that campus and there are two statues, John Carlos and Tommy Smith. [SPEAKER_00]: And so I got to pretty much walk by that statue every day that I was on campus. [SPEAKER_00]: So you are reminded about, [SPEAKER_00]: the world and about changes and about how to progress and all these things. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was just so mind-numbing to me that we saw this play out on TV. [SPEAKER_00]: We saw the president of the United States call him an SOB.
1:02:49 [SPEAKER_00]: We saw how the whole collective bargaining agreement thing was playing out. [SPEAKER_00]: And there are people who wanted to go out and say, the reason why Colin Kaepernick is not playing is because he doesn't want to play anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: And that was a narrative around this time. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was clear that that was not the case. [SPEAKER_00]: He was, they did not want him in the league anymore. [SPEAKER_00]: And they were doing whatever it took to keep him out of the league. [SPEAKER_00]: The fact that that could happen in the late 2010s and early 2020s when we should have been like so far beyond that kind of behavior.
1:03:33 [SPEAKER_00]: that is the thing that still breaks my heart the most. [SPEAKER_00]: So much so that when I met my wife and you know we were dating and she was asking me about you know X, Y, and Z and I was like yeah I'm so down on the NFL. [SPEAKER_00]: She took that to mean that I didn't watch football and I was like no I just don't like the corporation of the NFL. [SPEAKER_00]: Like I will always be a 49ers fan that's how I grew up. [SPEAKER_00]: I will always root for that team, we do a podcast about that team, but if someone asks me, do you love the NFL? [SPEAKER_00]: Hell, no, I'm not wearing that Roblo shield hat ever. [SPEAKER_00]: The actual NFL, it allows me to watch my team, but the politics in the governing of the NFL, I'm completely [SPEAKER_01]: I love the game and I love watching the players the NFL is the highest level of football and you have the best coaches, you have the best players.
1:04:40 [SPEAKER_01]: So I enjoy that aspect of it. [SPEAKER_01]: I particularly don't like our owner for reasons and then just the whole corporate structure itself [SPEAKER_01]: I am conflicted because I think the way they run their business is, I mean, they do a very good job of promoting their product, they do a very good job of making money, but I don't like how the sausage is made, ultimately. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't like that they have figured out a way to co-op.
1:05:26 [SPEAKER_01]: the players union. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't like the there's just so many things that I don't like about the business of the NFL. [SPEAKER_01]: I love the game. [SPEAKER_01]: I love the players and that shows and my support is the players. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they should get every time they [SPEAKER_01]: can get you wouldn't I don't understand how fans can do the calculus to be supportive of management versus labor in this situation. [SPEAKER_01]: It just that is just the boggles of my mind that you would be [SPEAKER_01]: Well, and maybe you don't have to do mental gymnastics.
1:06:10 [SPEAKER_01]: It would take me mental gymnastics to support Jed over anybody. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, given their money, and then when you talk about the dirty pool that they play in terms of reporting injuries and not giving these guys, [SPEAKER_01]: the full story and then how they use the media to vilify them when they attempt to get the proper information about their health and now they will go over, which is classic, when they try to get what they earn, what they are due in this billion dollar industry, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, then they're a cancer, then they're a diva, then they are, you know, they are the villains for trying to in the small window that they have to earn doing this.
1:07:10 [SPEAKER_01]: Again, the classic statement is, you know, it's what now. [SPEAKER_01]: 40 years old, 50 years old from North Dallas, 40. [SPEAKER_01]: When I call it a game, you call it a business, but when I call it a business, you call it a game. [SPEAKER_01]: That's ownership, stock, and trade is, you know, when it comes to, they are all about getting to $25 million. [SPEAKER_01]: $25 billion a year in revenue by $2027. [SPEAKER_01]: But when the players who I show up to see, I've never showed up, I've been a fan for 40 years. [SPEAKER_01]: I've never showed up to see Jed own. [SPEAKER_01]: I have always showed up to see the player.
1:07:52 [SPEAKER_01]: So when I hear fans say, I root for the name on the front of the jersey. [SPEAKER_01]: Not the name on the back of jersey. [SPEAKER_01]: When the hell, where you do that at? [SPEAKER_01]: I have always showed up for Joe Montana in Ronnie Locke, in John Taylor, in Frank Gore, in Debo Samuel, Jerry Rice. [SPEAKER_01]: I never showed up for the, it's the guys. [SPEAKER_01]: especially for this franchise and once so much it's a guy's with the names on the back of the jerseys that make the name on the front of the jerseys mean anything to me. [SPEAKER_01]: So when you try to just tell me some shit about next man up or whatever that the team is greater than the individuals, I can't watch it on that.
1:08:36 [SPEAKER_01]: That's just how I see it. [SPEAKER_01]: I want them to get everything they supposed to get. [SPEAKER_01]: Because, because Jed is going to be here, as long as they own this team, they're going to get their money, they will benefit from the appreciation that happens while these players are here, that they will never see the players that create the value or never see any of that money. [SPEAKER_01]: take away from this game because I know, and I've been a fan long enough to see what this game takes from them.
1:09:17 [SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, and they don't even have fucking insurance five years after they play. [SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, they need that money to be able to take care of themselves since the league is [SPEAKER_01]: for what would be a jet, not a year. [SPEAKER_00]: So would you recommend the book to for the industry? [SPEAKER_01]: My, um, yeah, to anybody, my sister-in-law, she's a Broncos fan, and she just finished it. [SPEAKER_01]: And we, um, I mentioned her, that we were doing this podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: And we talked about 20 minutes this afternoon about, um, the book and how disappointed she was, [SPEAKER_01]: in his parents and in the lead.
1:10:07 [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, it was interesting to hear a woman's perspective on the book. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I recommend to take care of everybody. [SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't even talk about Nessa, but Nessa just gets this giant wrap because she's very smart, she's successful. [SPEAKER_00]: And sheep was instrumental in some of the things that he bought into. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so you're telling me she's a smart and strong woman got it and you don't like that got it and that's that's a problem for some man and that because that is I've always been attracted to him. [SPEAKER_01]: I too wide worth it. [SPEAKER_01]: They were that woman and they made I'm a better man for one You know, you could I had to level up to be able to [SPEAKER_01]: be the husband and the man that they need it and it may be a better person for it.
1:11:07 [SPEAKER_01]: And that is what I see in her is that I don't see her as necessarily, you know, being like the puppet master, you know, she has thoughts and ideas and she influenced him. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is what ultimately [SPEAKER_01]: Do influence you. [SPEAKER_01]: I am blessed that my brothers and my friends are people who are supportive of me, but they also hold me accountable. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I can't just be on any bullshit and they are going to ride with it. [SPEAKER_01]: They will.
1:11:48 [SPEAKER_01]: if I am not doing my best, they'll let me know. [SPEAKER_01]: If I'm down, they click me up, but I think that I've just always been in a family and created a family where that is the norm. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what I see with him. [SPEAKER_01]: He [SPEAKER_01]: found a partner in him and there there's buy play about how, you know, he was kind of awesome bullshit early on and she checked him and he had to level up to who and what she was. [SPEAKER_01]: She was, she's a serious woman and [SPEAKER_01]: Everybody should have as high as everybody, as your mama, your auntie, whoever your sister, your mate, everybody should have strong women and promote your daughters.
1:12:38 [SPEAKER_01]: You should help them and support them to be as strong as possible to have a voice. [SPEAKER_01]: I know what my daughter's, that's what it was, is I was not [SPEAKER_01]: raising shrinking violence. [SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't raising women who was going to stand behind their husband and look down and be submissive. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, if you want her to submit, it's going to be because your leadership is on point. [SPEAKER_01]: And she just sees the strength in that. [SPEAKER_01]: You're not going to dominate her into, you're going to be on some bullshit. [SPEAKER_01]: And she just posted submit to it because of the sexual organ between your legs.
1:13:19 [SPEAKER_01]: That's crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: That is crazy talk. [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, big up to her because I had my bad looks, but my good looks where she's definitely one Eric Shoutout to Eric Reed. [SPEAKER_00]: Eric Reed. [SPEAKER_01]: Jim and John Harbaugh, and it was very nice, you know, during in the book, as a young man, and he's coming to, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: trying to express and experience his blackness, talking about Colin, two figures in his life that influenced him from a sporting perspective were Alan Iverson and Randy Moss and for Moss [SPEAKER_01]: to be able, you know, he talks about how cool it was to be throwing passes to one of his idols and the leadership and mentorship that Moss gave him.
1:14:21 [SPEAKER_01]: He was the one that told him that he felt like he had, you know, Moss in Moss fashion, which is interesting to see that him and Alex, [SPEAKER_01]: are now colleagues and apparently close friends, but he was like, you know, skews the expression, but this is most a white blank on take us nowhere, but you had the ability to take us to the Super Bowl and him speaking that life into Colin when he had to accomplish anything in the league. [SPEAKER_01]: And [SPEAKER_01]: He's Randy Walsh, you know, he's a Hall of Famer and still was a, you know, he wasn't Prime Randy, you know, I was in reading the book.
1:15:05 [SPEAKER_01]: I thought about the parallel again. [SPEAKER_01]: Mike Evans is at his peak was no Randy Moss, but it's similar. [SPEAKER_01]: They are at similar points in their careers. [SPEAKER_01]: as they find themselves on the 49ers clearly, Mike Evans still has football left and but he's not Mike Evans, he's not Hall of Fame or Mike Evans now in Randy Moss. [SPEAKER_01]: wasn't Miami Vikings, I mean, Minnesota Vikings, Randy Moss when he was here, but he was still an effective player and clearly was somebody who the players in the locker room, a lot of them grew up watching and his voice was a voice that mattered in there and Colin found [SPEAKER_01]: take on that role because they don't, you know, they got lives and, you know, a lot of them like you shouted out Alex and that, you know, there are a lot of quarterbacks who placed in that circumstance when where this guy is here.
1:16:17 [SPEAKER_01]: to take your job that are not gracious about sharing with them, but that was not, apparently, a court in the cap was not the case without, except when he would come off the field, they would talk about what he was seeing and that there was a clearly a competition between them, but it wasn't a toxic one and they just pushed each other and Alex would ask him questions and he would ask Alex questions and it was a healthy relationship [SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you were around long enough, even held as a 49er fan, doesn't sound like the Steve and Joe relationship was very healthy.
1:17:00 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, and in Walt, you know, to his credit, it seemed like Harbaugh was able to navigate it a little better than Walt's, because it seemed like, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: from what I've read, their wash did nothing to make things clear. [SPEAKER_00]: No, he wanted these guys out there throw at each other's writing exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is, it seems like that was its case with a carball with Alex and cap. [SPEAKER_00]: I think he knew. [SPEAKER_00]: Alex was not going to be the Alpha QB.
1:17:45 [SPEAKER_00]: And well, he's a competitor. [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't in him to do the Brett far of Aaron Rogers thing or the Aaron Rogers Jordan loved thing, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Like it just wasn't in him to go. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a one no matter what because he wasn't like he had been unsuccessful for so many years and he just probably appreciated hardball given him the shot is like God, I just got to be a team player, but at the same time his personality wasn't like that his personality wasn't going to be Joe Montana and be like Steve is great, but guess what I'm the best quarterback who ever played this game [SPEAKER_01]: kind of how you have to be and when we talk about the days of your in that old in the old we won't win a group that was a thing that was mad named to me about Alex meant that he was just so risk averse he would never make you know he was never going to play put the ball in [SPEAKER_01]: then challenge down fill.
1:18:53 [SPEAKER_01]: And there is something to be said for that. [SPEAKER_01]: But if you're going to win it all, and especially with somebody, Harboghu, [SPEAKER_01]: say what you wanted about him as a player. [SPEAKER_01]: He was just as aggressive as a player as he was as a coach. [SPEAKER_01]: He was not going to be able to understand. [SPEAKER_01]: I know Jim Harbaugh was gave Alex the Green like to press the ball and to take risk. [SPEAKER_01]: But I think like you hit it on the head. [SPEAKER_01]: That just wasn't [SPEAKER_01]: That he wasn't that guy.
1:19:36 [SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't going to be a Joe Montana or Steve Young. [SPEAKER_01]: He just that wasn't his leadership style that was not his play style and I felt, you know, it's funny because [SPEAKER_01]: that was really emotional in that same game when he made that play because he had been through so, I mean, I had a love, I had a love, I had a love, I was just what that makes me, but I felt so good for him to finally see success here during the Harbour here, but then we got to a point where you know Jim was like, look, to this guy is just not going to get us [SPEAKER_01]: where we're trying to go and, you know, so cap got to shot.
1:20:21 [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it is, you know, it's very disappointing that, you know, he doesn't deserve anybody's pity, but, you know, he feels like he needs to stay in shape and be ready for the call. [SPEAKER_01]: And that, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: But also, you know, you wonder in the league and a game that is supposed to be built in based on meritocracy, he just did not, that was not the case with him because there were not 64 at any point.
1:21:08 [SPEAKER_01]: from 2020 to what it would have been his prime. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, 2023, 24, there weren't 64 quarterbacks in the league that were better than him. [SPEAKER_01]: Point blank period. [SPEAKER_00]: And so there's cults should have been on his bad list. [SPEAKER_00]: They brought back Philip Rivers last year. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess the 49ers that man couldn't throw the ball 25 yards that that's crazy like to for that to be the case or for The Denver Broncos to have seriously considered what they should have brought somebody in rather than zero still them playing that playoff game last year.
1:21:57 [SPEAKER_01]: bad soldier, bad neck and all, it's just that isn't indictment on the lead, you know, you just, you know, and then the, the, the damning park is, they put him through all of that, and then they come with the, um, the social justice campaigns and whatnot that, you know, [SPEAKER_01]: He inspired, we can't, there's no way we can get away from the fact that it was a response to his protest that they put all that money into that, but then they can't find a way to circle back and give him some justice, which is just so hypocritical.
1:22:43 [SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're going to get out of here, but you know, the, I think the reason why Randy Moss didn't like Alex Smith is because Alex Smith couldn't throw the ball far enough for him to get under it. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, this was a good conversation. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad we were able to do it. [SPEAKER_00]: It kind of take it out of like the game mode and we were able to talk about something that was really interesting to both of us. [SPEAKER_00]: So all right, that is it from here. [SPEAKER_00]: So we'll be back Tuesday, not Monday, Tuesday for the next episode to talk about 49ers and commanders. [SPEAKER_00]: So for Rod, I'm WG, we will see when we see you piece out.
